Palliative and Hospice Care

When a cure is no longer possible, palliative care is a combination of active and compassionate therapies to provide comfort, support and quality of life to individuals and families who are living with a life-limiting illness. Palliative care strives to address physical, psychological, social, cultural, spiritual and practical needs of patients and their families, while maintaining dignity and the best quality of life possible.

For over 34 years, Caring Hearts, a registered charity, has been privileged to provide financial support to the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region Palliative Care Services. Through generous donors, Caring Hearts supports the acute care palliative care program delivery, enhancement of palliative care core services, much needed medical equipment, home care program and the palliative care efforts of Regina Wascana Grace Hospice. These programs offer quality of life, comfort and care for those dealing with a life limiting illness and bereavement. Caring Hearts also provides funding for continued educational opportunities to provide the most current training for staff and volunteers.

"My wife Bev, was the love of my life, and when she was diagnosed with lung cancer 18 years ago she underwent surgery and radiation therapy, and overcame the odds to become cancer free.  We had several great years together after that and enjoyed each other’s company and things like travelling and our wonderful son, Chris.  Unfortunately, in October 2015 her lung cancer returned, and this is where our journey with palliative care began. Bev’s support started with in-home palliative care, and the nurses and therapists that came to see her did everything imaginable to make her comfortable. I was so grateful to have my girl at home for as long as possible, but when I was no longer able to look after Bev the wonderful staff of the Palliative Care unit at Pasqua Hospital did everything humanly possible to make the final days of her life as comfortable and pain free as could be. These staff are in a league all of their own, and I have never encountered a group of people so dedicated to helping others.  Bev’s life came to an end on January 15th, 2016, and even though I miss her so much, I’m grateful for the many wonderful years we had together. I’m also so appreciative that people in Saskatchewan have the Palliative Care Unit, and thank them for helping my wife and my family during this difficult time."
